Background
-
Sikho’s passion for ceramics developed when he used to play with clay at the river streams back when he was growing up as a young boy in a small village “Qelane” in Mthatha in the Eastern Cape. Then it developed even more during his Fine arts studies at Walter Sisulu University in East London from 2009-2011.
After completing his studies he had the fortune of meeting a helpful mentor, Meshack Masuku at Grahamstown Arts festival in 2011 during his last year of his studies. The encounter provided him with an opportunity to work alongside Meshack as his apprentice in his Lusiba Ceramics studio located in Kenton-on-sea the following year.
During his Thirteenth month of working at Lusiba Ceramics, Sikho had already gained and invaluable knowledge and expertise based on daily operations of a workshop/studio in the ceramics industry. As a result, in the same period he started giving throwing lessons, workshops and also had started making his own work under Lusiba Ceramics.
Ckho Ceramique, located in Paarden Eiland in Cape Town. 100% owned by Sikho, offers a wide range of tea sets, dinner-ware, decor pots, jars, and sculptural works, which are sold to retail outlets, local markets, and everyday customers. Not only is he involved in creating his own projects, but he also participates in freelance work, production throwing for local studio potters, running pottery lessons for private students and teaching beginner courses at Clay Hands studio.

Forms and Jars
When shaping the clay on the pottery wheel, my intention is to craft a vessel that transcends mere functionality and becomes a testament to the beauty of African heritage. Each form I create is an homage to the resilience and strength of African women, whose structures embody the wisdom and warmth of a loving home. The vessel itself becomes a representation of a house, embodied with the essence of warmth and comfort, inviting all who enter to feel a sense of belonging.
The incorporation of a cow sculpture as a lid serves as a powerful symbol of protection, reminiscent of the patriarchal figure in an African homestead who guards against life's unwelcome intrusions. The cow's watchful presence also ensures that the inner sanctum remains pure and temperature-controlled, much like the careful nurturing of family and community within the home.
As I shape the clay, I envision a world where these vessels come to life, each one a testament to the our rich cultural heritage that inspires me, and each one a reminder of the beauty and strength that lies at the heart of African womanhood, fatherhood and childhood.
